Mutual funds do not guarantee returns. During bearish conditions in the capital market, funds typically underperform as the underlying securities perform poorly. Additionally, an increase in interest rates may lead to a decline in the values of bonds held within the portfolio. In such situations, mutual funds may be unable to distribute dividends or generate returns, requiring investors to await a market recovery to realise any returns.
Mutual fund investments are associated with the risk of principal erosion due to the downward movement of price of the underlying assets of the fund.
